thoughts: there’s so many moments where i was cringing SO HARD. but it’s such a fun time, especially if you like cheesy romcom retellings. like karkat trying desperately to lose dave is so funny 😭 (you will see later that i am a big fan of cheesy romcom stories, so i’m sorry LOL).

synopsis: a retelling of the romcom, “you’ve got mail” karkat is a local bookstore owner, and dave’s brother is a chain bookstore owner, and is moving in across the street. the only solace karkat seems to find is in his online friend, who is actually his enemy all along. angst ensues, drama, enemies to lovers, slowburn etc etc. :D

thoughts: speaking of romcom retellings… this one is unfinished, but the chapters there are so much fun. i adore the art that goes along with it. and just how silly, and angsty it can be. the dave and karkat are SPOT ON. and same with all the other characters. i especially enjoy rosemary, and the ones who work at karkats book store :)

synopsis: humanstuck superhero au. dave and his friends get a mysterious letter to attend a supernatural school.

thoughts: literally in my top three favorite homestuck fics of all time. this is so much more than just a davekat fic, like it’s a *whole* story. there’s also incredibly prominent rosemary, like they are not just shoved to the back. again it’s so thought out, and incredibly tropey. and all the characters are handled so well. it’s so incredibly fanfiction, but in the way where you can’t stop reading it. it’s popular for a reason, and very much deserves that popularity. i’m currently making my friend buddy read this with me <3

TOP THREE HOMESTUCK FICS AGAIN. this one is SO SILLY, it captures everything about rosemary perfectly. the cringe fail of it all, the rose thinking she’s a therapist but instead just over sharing her family’s issues online. it’s so funny, and well written. and i say this as someone who HATES first person pov in fics. it is done incredibly well. like, this author manages to pull it all off. rose’s blog post are so funny, and it will have you smiling like a fool the whole time. this and doc scratch school, and house of dirk are definitely like fics id want you to read the most out of this list!! :)

thoughts: incredibly cute, i love them so so much. rose lalonde will forever be a mess, and i love that for her <3

thoughts: i have not finished it, but it’s honestly so well put together. it really gets you feeling bad for characters, like gamzee?? poor little guy etc. the art is amazing, and it really does just feel like a continuation of homestuck!!!

synopsis: just like the title says, LOL.

thoughts: i’m not sure if this story is really my jam, that being said, it’s put together WONDERFULLY. like it’s incredibly popular for a reason. you can tell so much work went into it, and just a really big love for homestuck and it’s community. while also being really creative :) (i also haven’t finished this one either, so maybe my thoughts could change!)

synopsis: sitcom of dirk and caliborns life as a married couple. and their son/son in law is coming over for dinner. shenanigans ensue

thoughts: OKAY, so i know this is the fic that prompted the ask, lol! which means i’ve already recommended it. but i decided to add it so i could post my thoughts! :D i did not have any feelings towards dirkuu when i first read this, but now whenever i see anything dirkuu i’m like, “omg…the sitcom couple…” ITS JUST SUCH A GOOD FIC. i keep overusing the word incredible in this post, but i will use it again. because this fic really is just *that good*. i made my friend voice act it out with me on call once, and it was very fun LOL. this is my final top 3 in my top three homestuck fics 🕺 again really popular, but popular for a reason. just so much thought went into it, and the execution was perfect.

thoughts: have i ever thought about shipping terezi, and jade before? admittedly, no. is this fic absolutely adorable?? yes, very much so!!! literally they both deserve the world, and it’s so cute to seem them interact with each other. again just a very very sweet fic :)

There’s a sander sides fic i wrote like 8 years ago that had all of the sides get slowly and very brutally murdered one by one in hella graphic detail. I was trying to experiment with descriptors and visuals at that time. Definitely that one. I don’t think it’s on ao3 but it’s somewhere on my old Wattpad account

7.) what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Definitely Falling In Love (In The Most Literal Sense) or an unpublished eldritch smut horror DeadOnMain fic that’s forever staying in WIP hell. Falling In Love first and foremost has an ending, secondly they get along and it’s cute :)

8.) do you get hate on fics?

Not really. I occasionally get questions or criticism on my tumblr but that’s either advice or someone wanting answers and that isn’t hate.

9.) Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I have tried my hand at smut before. Mostly smutty scenes with kinda sorta fade to black, solely because I’m terrible at painting a mental picture for the reader so it always flows terribly. I’ve written that eldritch DeadOnMain thing as I said previously, and some of Jason’s matches Malone persona OF ideas.

10.) do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one?

Somewhere in my WIPs there is a homestuck AU DPxDC fic where DP kids are the humans and DC folks (primarily the teen titans) are the trolls. Definitely that one.

11.) have you ever had a fic stolen?

No fics but I’ve been sent asks that are word for word one of my prompts. I just delete those and go on with my day. Idk I don’t have a tiktok and someone’s probably imitating me on there with my prompts so possibly????

Ooooo It’s a solid tie between Kon/Tim and Dave/Karkat. One is my current favorite and the other is one that’s been my favorite ship for the longest time.

15.) what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

I have a WIP in my files that’s a DPxDC Dash/Danny fic where Dash is a bomb disposal tech and Danny just moved into Gotham. I have the entire outline written and almost a solid chapter done but I heavily doubt I’ll have the motivation to touch it again.

16.) what are your writing strengths?

I don’t think I have any, (I haven’t written a full length fic in so long I can’t really tell 😅) but I’m very good at setting tone. Idk what do y’all think?

17.) writing weaknesses?

Dialogue. 100% dialogue. It always feels clunky and unconversational whenever I read it back. I swear the second I start writing talking I forget how conversations work.

18.) thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?

I’d probably throw a simple word here in there of the other language if I’m writing a bilingual speaker or ask a pal to help me with translations because I only know English and I know damn well that friends are better translators than google.

19.) first fandom you wrote for?

Sander Sides! I wrote a solid 500ish prompts for that fandom and like 70k worth of fics. It was what got me into writing and for that I’m so very glad.

20.) Fav fic you’ve ever written?

Definitely my Batman mermaid au. I love it to bits and I’m so proud of the designs and I’m always kinda sad that I’m the only one as enthused about this work as I am. None the less I reread it at least every 3 months and it always makes me smile doing so.

as a camp counselor (technically not currently bc i went home for Illness) and homestuck fan (also technically not currently bc I'm too busy being a camp counselor) i love camp skaia. which homestuck characters are most likely to be the "we're ALL sick there's no reason you can't do the hike up the hill" (has mild cold and vague heatsickness at worst) counselor x "actual lung infection but thinks it's a really normal cold" (very easily gaslit) counselor program group pair? i feel like eridan and kanaya are hot contenders here

so let’s begin: my immediate instinct was kanaya and tavros are the most easily gaslit, or adhere most to given direction (we’re not going to talk about HIM). but then who to pair them with? they are both wet cats that won’t work. we decided that YES kanaya and eridan definitely make sense! but in which role? it may seem obvious but NO! eridan too sick? whiny fussy pitiful sopping kitty he’s just a beanbag full of milk! so we decided barely sick eridan, otherwise he’d be throwing a fit. instead he’s referring to his Superior Genes! and kanaya is. strugglin. but fuck man here we are 🤷‍♂️

But we’re not done yet!

the next we considered was karkat and terezi!! especially aided through the lens of karkat’s old crush on terezi; he’s too whipped and in denial to deny a girl a hand!

for the bigger drawings i capped it off with a good ol favorite of mine; erifef. why did i like them? man idek anymore but it worked really well with the idea of eridan being the sicker one, but being ok such thin ice over his constant whining that he just has to go along with it we just though it was funny hehe. it can be viewed through any lens! snippy or non, s’all good here! it’s all canon.

It’s genuinely kind of hilarious to me how one of the current memes in the Homestuck fandom is “we’ve run out of things to analyze/talk about” when I feel like that’s honestly only even half applicable to the fan favorite characters, predominantly the Striders and Karkat.

We haven’t “run out of things to analyze”. It’s just that the fandom has absolutely run easily accessible conversations about certain characters into the ground. Just because there isn’t anything easy left to talk about with the Striders anymore doesn’t mean that there’s no content left.

Genuinely, I think the fandom needs to start paying more attention to The Felt, or The Exiles, or the Midnight Crew. There’s so much to talk about there, but the main fanbase cares so little for them that fans of Intermission characters have branched off into their own self-sustaining fandom. It’s ridiculous, too, because the Midnight Crew/Felt Intermission is pretty objectively one of the best parts of the comic.

There’s not nothing left to talk about! It’s just that all of the easy topics have been beaten to death. The only thing to do now is to either start talking about the harder subjects- be more critical, more observant to the writer’s bigotry, more receptive of the more difficult and horrifying themes in the comic- or to start talking about the adult characters in the comic more. Someone who isn’t the Betas or the Alpha Kids.

i dunno, it's... mechanical, it's a craft not an art. It's like my default state. It only really stops when I have too much stress. Or when I stop to refill on JRPGs......

But I'm a big iteration and drafts person. Outline is first draft, then you write the thing and that's second draft, then you start from the top and rewrite it all over again until it's good.

it's just a wheel that keeps turning.

19. the most interesting topic you’ve researched for a fic

uuuuuuh the city of Chicago. yes, even now. which is why i feature it in every fucking story i can.

tho i also had to research the shit out of Seattle for that book i wrote and that was also very fun. god, that Gehry building is fuck ugly.

22. do you ever worry about public reaction to what you’re writing? how do you get past that?

uuuuuh at this point I mostly hope someone else will be interested in whatever weird niche I'm fixated on? it's always fun when I start up something weird and then people decide they like the weird thing too! that honestly makes for the best time. so idk I actually advocate people writing the weirdest shit in their hearts bc that's what makes cool ppl interested in your stuff, I think.

28. your least favorite part of the writing process

If there are always three drafts (outline, first, and final) I like doing the first/middle one the least. It's all about flow and tempo, which are the most nebulous parts of writing and the most "you just gotta feel it" shit, and I hate that. I want everything to be mechanical and shit.

I have an idea for a Rebellion Davesolkat AU where it's basically a time loop mechanic of Sollux leaving himself a like .txt document of what to do everytime? The point is that Karkat inevitably becomes the Second Sufferer and ends up going toe to toe with the Condesce, who inevitably wins everytime and ends up helming Sollux, who then sends the updated file to the next iteration of his younger self.

Enter Dave who finds this out and is like "you know what, fuck it what if instead of just trying to passively keep the Condesce from killing our boyfriend, we just jumpstart the Rebellion even earlier and take the fight to her?" And Sollux is like "woah holy shit yeah you're right" and they kiss.

The AU is currently named GOLD PILOT after my favorite HS song, what do you guys think?

The art here is going from newest to oldest. I can never quite settle on what's going on with her face and head features. Or the presence and degree of neck/chest fluff.

But, anyway! Her full name is Leshelle Leigh Starr yiv Rolante IV, but she usually just sticks to Shelly Starr. Stylistically she's basically a unicorn anthro. But in "canon" (my own setting and stories) she's effectively an alien from a world named Kardac, which is currently at a level of development roughly equivalent to our mid 19th century, where the industrial revolution is a few decades old and capitalism-as-we-know-it is really getting its bullshit going.

Kardac has three different sapient species living on it: Unicorns, Saurians, and Narsima. As you can probably guess, Shelly belongs to the first group. Specifically, she's a "highland" unicorn, who tend to have white fur, and a lot of it, especially with the feathering on the forelimbs.

Probably the most oddball part of their anatomy compared to what you might expect from your typical unicorn (anthro or otherwise) is their four-toed feet. They're actually inspired by hippo feet! Though taller and not quite as thick. Otherwise, unicorns are basically just anthro versions of those old-timey unicorns that have some goat-like features.

Subsequently, Shelly kinda looks like... well...

Anyway... personality-wise she's everything from adorably chipper to self-destructively furious. She... goes through a lot. And some of it is her own fault. But most of the time she's actually pretty personable. She's intelligent and well-read, and has good ideas when she actually stops to think. She likes talking about politics, society, arts, and entertainment. Just like me! Go figure. She really is bordering on a sona at times. Overall, she's kinda this blend of like, Karkat and Mae Borowski. Among other things.

Her canon story begins as she's finishing up her education at 18. She's dreading the fact that her controlling father is just going to have her work at his law office as a glorified secretary for the rest of her life, which she expects to be fairly short and pointless thanks to various chronic neurological issues she has, a fact that weighs on her daily.

And then a mysterious cult starts trying to murder her for no discernible reason, and at the same time an equally mysterious band of brigands show up to protect her and bring her somewhere safer. And, what would be a curse for most, turns out to be the key to her freedom. And so begins the long, violent tale of a driven young adult, who only feels alive in the face of death.

Grouch the Cat is her roommate and loves her so much it literally saves her life.
